Camp Sagamore 2007 Review PDF

We all have a journey to take, a story to tell, and a purpose to fulfill. Who we are and who we will become is dependant on lifeÕs experiences. As we search and explore our heritage, culture and connections, we grow personally and professionally. As artists, whether dancers or painters, writers or quilt makers, we express and communicate our ideas and thoughts. As teachers we guide our students to do the same. “É The arts are the language of human expression, understanding, and functionality. They convey form and meaning to and from the world around us.” Communication, a key component of the New York State Standards in all disciplines, will be an underlying focus this summer as we look at integrating many methods and mediums of idea sharing. Taking guidance from the native peoples of Africa and America, who were so adept at using the gifts of nature, we will explore natural dying, plant imprinting, batik and alternative methods of image transfer. Organic fibers will be included in quilt making and fabric images inspired by the hill tribes of Thailand, northern villages of India, Colonial Americans and the artists Faith Ringgold and Miriam Shapiro. The ceremonial and spiritual aspect of art will be considered, moving from threads to paper, visual journals and book making, literature connections, community projects and grant writing will round out the week.

The Adirondack Mountains provide a perfect setting for a week of total emersion. Sagamore also presents informative educational tours, 20 miles of hiking trails, a beautiful lake for swimming, with many nearby museums and galleries. Sleeping accommodations are in beautiful authentic historic buildings. This national landmark dating from 1897, built by W.W. Durant, was the summer retreat of the Alfred G. Vanderbilt family for over 50 years. Buffet style meals are prepared by Sagamore's chef and served in the paneled dinning hall that overlooks Sagamore Lake. See www.sagamore.org
