The New York State Art Teachers Association has created a curriculum that addresses the NYS Learning Standards, synthesizes NYS Syllabi with local curricula drawn from across the state, and relies on the best practices and experience from the field to provide a comprehensive plan for visual art education.

The Curriculum Companion is a sequential document that follows the NYS Standards through the Performance Indicators at each grade level. Beginning with the Elements of Art and the Principles of Design, educators move through art application and connections to other disciplines. The Scope and Sequence Section has been adopted by the New York State Education Department as the basis of the Visual Arts Core Curriculum Resource Guide.

The expanded Topics Section has been designed to assist art educators in the development of local curricula and lesson planning by connecting application, tools and materials, thematic references, artists, cultures, art careers, the elements and principles, and assessment.

The Appendix includes a leveled art vocabulary, additional lists of artists and art careers, lesson plan and assessment formats, a complete NYSATA Portfolio Project brochure, a comprehensive bibliography, and more.

The sequential format of the guide allows teachers to differentiate instruction by assessing students' capabilities and either moving back or ahead on the continuum to modify or enrich. Curriculum mapping and interdisciplinary lesson planning are facilitated by the inclusion of the specific Standards and Performance Indicators of other subject areas as they integrate with art content.

The Curriculum Companion was designed with various groups in mind. It will help new teachers assess their students' abilities and enable them to plan accordingly. It also provides easy-to-use comprehensive content. Veteran teachers will be able to add to their repertoire with new lesson formats and assessment instruments. The topic sections at each grade level and the leveled vocabulary can serve as content benchmarks. Administrators can use the material to direct local curriculum development and assess programs currently in place.
